Yunnan Travel Tips

Yunnan is situated on Yunnan-Guizhou plateau in southwest China. Most parts of Yunnan are about 2000 meters above sea level. Meanwhile, Yunnan's climate is diverse, and the weather is changeable. The following are a few good tips for you to remember when traveling in Yunnan.

Altitude Sickness

The high altitude of the Yunnan Highland affects some people to some extent. Especially, in northwestern tip of Yunnan where the elevation is above 2400 meters, the effect of lack of oxygen often occurs. The usual symptoms of altitude sickness include headache, lethargy, and dizziness. Usually, it is not necessary to see a doctor for these symptoms which would disappear in one or two days.

But in order to minimize or eliminate the effect of altitude sickness. Eat light, high-carbohydrate meals, not to drink any alcohol, and drink plenty of water. Avoid strenuous activities. See a doctor in case of serious symptoms, such as, breathlessness, vomiting, and severe headache.

Clothing

When visiting Yunnan in summer, it is better to wear long-sleeve shirt and pants for protecting you from sunburn, and sometimes, the bites of mosquitoes. Clothing should be simple and consist of layers which can be added or removed as temperatures vary during the day. A sweater or light jacket will be useful. In winter, if traveling to the southern part of Yunnan, light, cotton clothing is suitable for the tropics, but if visiting the northwest part of the province, you should take gloves and a warm coat or jacket. Comfortable shoes are recommended, like sports shoes, soft sole shoes and walking shoes.

Necessities

Summer is also the rainy season in Yunnan; you should bring sunscreen lotion and a hat. Lip salve and skin cream are necessary, as the high, dry plateau is likely to cause chapped lips and cracked skin. An umbrella or raincoat is needed as well, because the weather is changeable and there is always sunshine between the showers.
